Profitability and Feasibility of Vegetable Farming in Urban Agriculture: A Case in Surakarta City

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) estimate the income and profits, and (2) assess the feasibility of vegetable farming in urban agriculture in Surakarta. The data were generated from 30 respondents. With respect to profitability, the result shows that the highest average income and profit is green mustards which is Rp1.184.476/m2 and Rp522.642/m2, respectively. The average income of red chili is Rp699.187/m2 and chili pepper is Rp624.106/m2. Chili pepper gives a higher profit (Rp380.301/m2) than red chili (Rp315.998/m2). The study found that the chosen commodities gives feasible outcome. In terms of feasibility, the R/C ratio of chili pepper is the highest (2,50) followed by red chili (2,30) and green mustard (2,19). However, green mustard is the highest in break even point (BEP) on production (46 plants) followed by chili pepper (28 plants) and red chili (27 plants). For the BEP on revenue, the highest is Rp 349.088 (green mustard), followed by Rp 271.042 (chili pepper) and Rp 253.792 (red chili). While the highes of BEP on price is Rp 5.714 (red chili), followed by Rp 3.725 (green mustard) and Rp 3.573 (chili pepper). The study suggests green mustard as the most recommended crop for urban farming practice.
